Well I have been a VW guy all my life, owned tons of them, sold my last one after I moved to Montana and have been jones-ing for one ever since I sold mine. I have always liked the 85-92 mkII GTI's. Been my car forever. I have a friend in Portland that still builds one up from time to time. I told him if he ever wanted to sell his personal car to give me a hollar. Well about 3 weeks ago, he did just that. I was planning to attend the ORCRC comp on the 25th anyway, so my wife drove out with me and we picked up the car too. NOW, this is not your average GTI. It is a 92' last year of this body style, factory Recaros, only 81k actual miles, non power car, but has a/c, roof, cruise and tilt, Super rare rally-euro lights, and grill, lowered with neuspeed springs, sway bars, stress bars and 13.8" brembos up front and 11.3" brembos out back, full 5 lug VR wheel conversion too. This car has a secret also. He did a complete 1995 VR6 swap, 2.9L VR6, 268 cams, techtonics ecm and chip, techtonics intake, header and 2.5" stainless exhaust, ceramic clutch, lightened flywheel, and quaffe differntial. What does that mean? 301HP at the crank and 238 at the wheels, car weighs 2388 pounds with a full tank of gas and me in it. 8LBS PER HP, pretty damn good #'s!

here are a few pics and some more on the album here:

Your a fawker but i love Mk2 veedubs. I used to own a 85 GTi which was later renamed the GT. I currently own a 03 GTI with the 24V VR6 and a 91 GLi with the 16V 2.0 I thought about doing a swap but figured I can get as much or more out of this motor with a little help of a turbolader. I'm sure your not gonna tell but how much did you pay? They had a super clean one on Craigslist here in San Jose for like 6K. I love it"thumbsup" BTW this is something i would check for immediately did he install the piece of sheetmetal in the engine bay that stiffens the clutch-brake pedal area? They warn you about this issue on VWvortex.

Yes, if you saw the underside of this car, you would think it was a factory VR6, that is how perfect everything is."thumbsup"

I saw one of those cars on a dyno in Lexington,Ky. The guy had a different motor in it.(turbo charged I think) He had it running 8,500 rpms and setting on 165 mph. I ask him what you trying to do blow it up. He said no trying to find out where the high speed firing breaks down. He said it looses power at about 180 mph. I told him no way I'd ride in a VW going anywhere over 100 mph. I never knew a VW could go 180 mph til last year. Nice car looks nice. Next time I'm in Lexington I'll get his number for you."thumbsup"

My first VW was a late 70's rabbit I had in HS. My first GTI was a black 83 that I bought in 1989 while in college. Added a few neuspeed goodies and koni adjustables to that one.

I drove that until I got out of college and bought a black 92 GTI in 94, with the 16v, 2.0L, factory recaros (like yours) and the BBS wheels. I sure loved that car. I didn't do a thing to it other than add the koni adjustables when mine needed replacement. I sold it when I got a company car and have been GTI-less since. I still get the idea every few yrs to build up a nice auto-x ready MKII, but things like a mortgage, children, etc. always win out.

Thank for the nice trip down memory lane Unimoger.

Nice Ben... I've always had a love of 80's German engineering. My experience has been mostly with BMW 5 series from '83 to '88, but my dad owned an '85 diesel Jetta that made me a believer in VW's. His car ran for about 500k miles before the odometer broke from too many rewinds ;-) . It eventually sat in the driveway after about 685k miles and was held together by duct tape and bailing wire. The car actually runs fine to this day (he's since given it away because of a mold problem from storing it in the woods), and the new owner has put on an additional 50k or so miles.

The engine had one rebuild after about 200k miles when his timing belt went out on him.
