What gives Thai iced tea its flavor? ›

In Thailand, the tea is made milky and sweet by the addition of sugar, sweetened condensed milk, and evaporated milk. Sometimes, non-dairy creamer (like Coffeemate) is also added. Right: Thai style Thai tea uses condensed milk in the tea with evaporated milk on top.

Is homemade Thai tea healthy? ›

Like many forms of herbal tea, Thai tea is rich in antioxidants that can help you maintain a healthy immune system. Studies have shown that Thai tea has similar levels of antioxidants as green tea and other herbal teas popularized specifically for their anti-inflammatory benefits.

Why is my Thai tea not orange? ›

While many Thai iced tea mixes often contain a low-grade powder or syrup, this authentic recipe gets its flavor from good-quality black tea and spices without any artificial ingredients. This means your Thai tea won't be bright orange, since the color comes from a dye added to Thai tea mixes.

Why does Thai tea taste so good? ›

Thai tea boba, also known as Thai iced tea with boba, is a strong and sweet black tea that is often infused with spices like star anime or cardamon, providing a distinct and aromatic flavor profile. The addition of milk brings creaminess to the tea and tapioca pearls (boba) contribute to the chewy texture.

What is the orange stuff in Thai tea? ›

As the flavour and colour of the tea would fade, orange food colouring and flavourings (spice mix, tamarind) were added to extend the life of the tea and also to make it more appealing.

Why is my Thai Iced Tea bitter? ›

Over-steeping causes tea to turn bitter

Over-steeping tea means that you let it soak in the water for too long.

Is it OK to drink Thai tea everyday? ›

Thai tea contains considerable amounts of added sugar — about six teaspoons — which may be harmful to your health if consumed regularly.

Is Thai tea just milk tea? ›

It's unclear, exactly, when Thai tea (known in Thailand as Cha Yen) — a mixture of black tea, condensed milk, and sometimes ice — was invented, though many suspect it was a lingering influence from Field Marshal Pibul Songkram, a Thai leader with a penchant for western culture (hence the ice and milk).

Is Thai tea high in caffeine? ›

Does Thai tea have a lot of caffeine? Thai tea has a medium amount of caffeine. A typical Thai tea made with black tea will contain 47 mg of caffeine per serving (if it's made with 8oz of black tea). Decaf Thai tea and other tea types can be used instead, however, which will alter the caffeine levels.

What gives Thai tea its flavor? ›

The tea is sweetened with sugar and condensed milk and served chilled. Evaporated milk, or whole milk is poured over the tea and ice before serving to add taste and creamy appearance.

Why is my Thai tea weak? ›

If your tea tastes too weak, make it stronger by adding 1 to 2 tablespoons more tea mix to each cup of boiling water. It's easier to weaken strong tea than to make weak tea stronger later - so add less water during steeping and if the resulting tea tastes too strong, add water to dilute to the strength you desire.

How to make Thai tea without a strainer? ›

Simply grab a piece of kitchen roll and fold twice into a square. Fold out one pocket and place in your mug. (You might want to cleanse the kitchen roll first to remove any paper taste). Place the loose leaf in the kitchen roll, pour over hot water and leave to brew.

What is the composition of Thai tea? ›

Thai tea can be prepared from loose black tea leaves or Thai tea bags, and it may be served hot instead of iced. Sweetened condensed milk, or evaporated milk mixed with sugar, is added to Thai tea before chilling it. This gives it a creamy layer on top.

What is in Thai Iced Tea that makes it orange? ›

Food coloring. The bright, unique color of Thai Iced Tea comes from food coloring added to black tea in Thai Tea Mix. On its own, the brewed tea is deep red. Stir in sweetened condensed milk (or another type of milk), and the tea turns orange.

What is Thai tea boba made of?
