Girl Talk: Influencers & Current Events (2024)

I shared this to my story earlier this week and I wanted to take a moment to talk about it a little further here.

For me, one of the hardest things about being an “influencer” is navigating current events. When I first started this, I was sharing some blog posts and over-filtered photos as a hobby. I never could have predicted what this industry and, in turn, my job would become… and for the most part, it’s incredible and I am immensely grateful.

But in the age of constant content and being very accessible all the time, it’s also quite difficult to show up every day amongst a whole lot of unprecedented times.

If you speak up, people get mad. If you don’t speak up, people get mad. If you speak up in the wrong way, people get mad. If you don’t speak up EVERY DAY and someone misses the story or post when you did speak up, people get mad. And mad people on the internet can be shockingly mean.

Now don’t get me wrong, I understand that there is value in people with platforms spreading awareness about important issues. It can be really powerful, and if you’ve followed me for any length of time, then you know that I’ve done it a lot about a wide variety of topics over the years.

But sometimes I stay quiet. Whether that’s because of my mental health that day, my knowledge on the subject, how I might handle nasty DMs and messages, or just my way of processing what is happening.

Because at the end of the day, I am a human being. I’m not perfect. I am dealing with things that I don’t share with you… because I don’t share everything with you. No one shares 100% of their thoughts, feelings, actions, etc with the internet. Being authentic online is not about sharing absolutely everything. It’s about being human.

On the flip side, I totally get it if you only want to support creators online who have values that align with yours. That is totally your right! I feel similarly as a consumer!

I’d just like to gently remind you that the people you follow online are also just people. Flawed, overwhelmed people who might not always show up exactly how you want them to.

And I think it would benefit everyone to either engage in respectful conversations to see if your values align/you can provide them with information to help them learn, unfollow quietly, and/or extend them a little grace.

How would you acknowledge current events if you had an online platform? Or if you do have an online presence, how do you handle it?

I forgot how much I love this dress - and it’s still available this year!! I have it in petite sizing (4P) but I had tried the regular 2 on in store and it was very similar, just a little longer. I also think the denim version is ADORABLE.

My Ninja Creami is still on sale! I just filmed a new recipe for early next week, but in the meantime, I also love this one and this one. It’s the best summer appliance - you won’t regret getting one, I promise! (You can see more Walmart sale picks here too!)

My favorite jean jacket is still 58% off!!! In fact, all of ABLE’s products are 30% off in my Flagship shop this weekend. Lots of beautiful leather!

Hotel Lobby released a new summer candle - HAMPTONS! It’s giving all the farmer’s markets and Nancy Meyers vibes 🙌🏻

Speaking of rom coms, I love these interiors inspired by Kathleen Kelly from You’ve Got Mail. Swoooon!

I am getting really close to ordering these sweats that look exactly like jeans… should I do it?! Does anyone have them?

This bow tee is screaming my name.

I cannot WAIT for Season 3 of The Bear. It looks so good!!!

This lemon print dress reminds me so much of this one that I wore in Positano. I loooove!

In fact, J.Crew has a ton of really great new arrivals. I want so many things!

One of my favorite bookstagrammers released her Summer Reading Guide and I saved it so fast! Can’t wait to read everything on her list!

No matter how many times I tell myself I’m going to self-tan, I know I’m not actually going to… but I did just buy myself this Body Coverage Perfector and I’m SO excited.

I’m not a big cottage cheese girl, but this banana bread looks so good that I’m going to try it. I’ll report back!

This is the best active dress out there because you don’t need to take the whole thing off to go to the bathroom - seriously whoever created the opening in the back is a GENIUS. I’ve been wearing it so much, I’m considering getting another one, especially because there are a few colors on sale. I also like this new cami version too!
