I don't know much about NBs. There is a 2004 Mazdaspeed with 85,000 miles (in very good shape) for sale for $9,500 in the southern US. Is this worth pursuing?

Considering the miles, maybe no and maybe yes..

If I were Mazdaspeed shopping, I think I would be shopping for one with half those miles at most. Yes, it will cost thousands more but then again at 85kmiles, this one may also "cost" thousands more after you get it home.

I'm of the opinion that buying the lowest mileage car for my needs is best. For me, that means:
Garage queen under 10k miles.
Daily driver under 60k miles.

Yes, low miles costs more up front but after doing the baseline, you'll still be dollars ahead. High mile cars have mileage depreciation and wear and tear that low mile cars don't usually have. Both require baseline. But a baselined high mileage car still has mileage related wear and tear. That costs money to "fix" and that must be factored in when deciding when a car is worth pursuing.

Thanks, Bob. That is pretty much what I have done in the past. I was just wondering if there was anything particular to a Mazdaspeed that makes this a great opportunity.

From my trolling sales, great opportunity is a thing of the past if defined in dollars. I think "great opportunity" needs to be redefined in terms of miles and one should expect to pay in the $15k-$25k range for a good MSM. I'm just glad they don't appeal to me.

Can you readily bring US cars into Canada or is there some retrofitting that costs? Personally, $9,500 for a regular 2004 NB with 85,000 miles would be a good deal in today's world, for an MSM it's exceptional IF it has been well cared for. With turbo cars, maintenance, and particularly oil changes, are essential to the value of the car. Would also be nice if it had some upgrades to the turbo as it wasn't impressive in stock form, at least to me.

Seems like a very good deal to me if there’s no issues.

Bringing cars more than 15 years old into Canada is not that difficult. As for this car, the seller just raised his price $4,000 so it is a moot point.

That was my initial thoughts based on what's available these day. As a semi-daily or weekend drive seems like there's not a lot of down side. I'm not saying it is or isn't worth the new price the OP mentioned of $13,500, but even at that there's not much in the way of sub 100k MSM's

The phone number to call owner is a SFO area code but the Autotrader listing says car is in Florida. Anyone clarify? Sounds like a great deal with the miles and a hardtop. If it’s in CA will a Megasquirt cause it to fail smog?

Agreed. It's good to see a bit of normalcy returning to the market.
